“Call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Psalm 50:15 (RSV)
I become overwhelmed when things break or malfunction, especially when I’m not sure who to call first, to get it fixed. If you live alone like me, you provably understand how stressful this can be.
I once shared the story of when my dryer vent broke loose and I didn’t know whether I should go to Home Depot to ask an employee for advice, or to hire a handyman. Then I recalled my husband’s best friend, Ben, told me to call him if I ever needed anything, after my late husband passed away. As I worried about the dryer vent problem, I felt that my husband would want me to call Ben, so I did. He immediately came over, looked at the problem, went to buy the part that was needed, and fixed the dryer vent for me.
I was very thankful that Ben helped me out that day, but most of the later repair needs in my home required calling a professional service company. Before calling a service company, I usually pray for a good repairman to be sent, asking God to send an angel alongside them to guide them through every aspect of the repair.
The funny thing about praying that prayer is that usually the repairman who arrives, has the first name of an angel or of some heavenly significance. My window installer was Michael, my electrician was Raphael, and my plumber was Gabriel, and to top it off, my exterminator’s name was Jesus. Needless to say, they all did an excellent job job.
Not that names really make a difference, but it’s funny that when we pray first, and ask for angelic assistance, the names of the service men were all angels’ names. Calling on God first in the time of trouble, brings interesting and positive results.
My home may not be a DIY (do it yourself) household, but it is a DIWJ (do it with Jesus) household.
Having a problem we cannot solve can leave us feeling stressed and alone, but we are never alone when we remember that God is our first “go to”person. He will lead us in the right path and send the right person to solve the problem, when we call upon Him in our day of trouble.
Lord, thank you that whenever we call upon you first, you always send us help in a time of trouble. Amen
